North Node & South Node in Signs (Astrology)

10/3/2015

[updated on 8/27/2016]

I used to believe that the transition towards the North Node is a slow process, like the growth of trees. However, after a little bit of research and meditating, my views have changed. The shift towards the North Node can happen quickly, suddenly and take us by complete surprise. The North Node is like a sudden revolution that pulls us out of the South Node's safety and security. South Node is like the "status quo" of our lives. So, North Node is what's fresh, new and radical in our lives. The South Node is our comfort zone, our established ways/habits and manners. Thus, it's often scary to leave the South Node behind.

The key is to consciously move towards the North Node, so when life "pushes" us there out of the blue, we won't find ourselves in endless chaos and unbearable emotional turmoil. Just like sudden revolutions, we can't always be completely prepared for when and how it all happens. But, we can do certain things to make it easier, if that's even possible. Unfortunately, it gets more complicated. If there are planets/objects making strong aspects to the North & South Nodes, then we may need to work with those planets/objects, which can make our transition (towards the North Node) harder or easier, depending on the aspect.

They say North Node is what you must strive to become; it's the lesson of a lifetime. South Node is said to be habits or patterns of behavior that you need to leave behind. However, I have noticed that while we strive for the qualities of the North Node, we shouldn't completely abandon South Node traits. Yes, we tend to carry an extreme form of South Node characteristics, but our South Node Sign isn't all bad.

I believe certain planetary transits trigger our North/South Nodes and activate the "revolution" – so this process probably happens at different times for different people. If we are aware of our North Node, then we can consciously help ourselves move in that direction. Otherwise, life may "push" us towards the North Node, whether we are ready or not. By gaining North Node qualities, we awaken to a new/fresh perspective. I don't agree that we must completely abandon South Node traits. We take South Node's “good stuff” as we go toward the North Node. The North Node has a dark side too if we become unbalanced in it.

Now, let's take a look at North and South Node Signs and lessons they can entail.

North Node in Aries, South Node in Libra: You are extremely self-conscious and worry excessively about how your behavior affects others. Essentially, you lack confidence. You are so worried about what others think (about you) that you have no sense of self whatsoever. Your lesson is to build a solid sense of self and learn the value of self-initiated action.

North Node in Taurus, South Node in Scorpio: You are stuck inside your emotions and sometimes lose all sense of sanity. The beautiful world you have created for yourself, inside yourself, is sometimes a torturous prison. Your lesson is to learn how to balance your emotions and be content with simplicity.

North Node in Gemini, South Node in Sagittarius: You are flying through life. You are above it all and details are below you. You are seeking what's big and beyond your reach. Your lesson is to set aside your outlandish philosophical excuses and carefully pay attention to the small stuff, because the devil is in the details.

North Node in Cancer, South Node in Capricorn: You are tough, at least you think so. You do not want to feel vulnerable for even a second. However, emotions always seem to get in the way of your career plans. Your lesson is to connect to your past, to your roots/ancestors and feel the pulse of emotions that give everything meaning.

North Node in Leo, South Node in Aquarius: Your are about your friends, your community, your country and/or your tribe. You love being part of groups and organizations. However, you tend to completely blend in and lose your identity. Your lesson is find your individuality and love yourself exactly as you are, warts and all.

North Node in Virgo, South Node in Pisces:
You hide inside yourself. You go with the flow. You are extremely sensitive. You often get lost within yourself and suffer a bad case of confusion. Your lesson is to find clarity through questioning, doubting and researching.

North Node in Libra, South Node in Aries: You are too self-assured and that gets you in a lot of trouble. You can't see beyond your own point of view. To say that you are unbalanced is an understatement. You have to learn that cooperating isn't a sign of weakness. Instead, it can make your life a lot easier.

North Node in Scorpio, South Node in Taurus: After you eat everything in sight and buy all the clothes that you can possible afford, you realize that emotions are what give life meaning. Your lesson is to learn the role and importance of instincts/emotions.

North Node in Sagittarius, South Node in Gemini: You are super intellectual. You are a wordsmith. You jump from book to book, hoping to find a scrap of meaning, but all you see are cold facts. Your lesson is to learn how to “connect the dots”: to seek and find overarching themes and patterns in life, because that's where your greatest joy can come from.

North Node in Capricorn, South Node in Cancer: You don't want to get out of your cocoon. Your are attached to your emotions, home and roots. However, your clinging to your past is holding you back. Your lesson is to slowly step outside your comfort zone and make your way into the public eye.

North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo: You like who you are and you don't want anybody else to change you. You value your individuality and cling to it for dear life. After being extremely self-involved and lonely, you realize that a community of like-minded folks quenches a deep thirst.

North Node in Pisces, South Node in Virgo: You like to work and stick to facts. Anything uncertain or unknown scares you. Your lesson is to realize that there are things beyond your control and to have a little faith. Also, acting a little silly, once in a while, can be fun.
